Single-point optical turbulence thermosonde system

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Small random variations in the index of refraction of the atmosphere produce atmospheric turbulence. Since the index of refraction of air is a function of the atmospheric density, it is possible to measure the index of refraction structure parameter from vertical temperature and pressure differences of an ascending or descending balloon. In the past, two probes connected differentially were used for this measurement. The Naval Postgraduate School has developed a single probe, high speed thermosonde system. Results from this system are presented. This system can be coupled with an acoustic sounder for high resolution, low altitude turbulence profiling.
