Optical measurement of the relative roughnesses of dielectric coatings on diffusive substrates

Abstract

The surface roughness of a transparent or translucent dielectric coating can affect the optical appearance of a diffusive surface onto which the coating is applied. Because such coatings are often fragile, it would be useful to have a noncontact, optical method by which to measure their roughnesses.
