Abstract
Multistage networks are widely used in parallel signal-processing systems for interconnection, sorting, and computing.1 In such a network, each stage is composed of a fixed connection pattern and an array of 2 × 2 bypass/exchange switch modules. The inherent parallelism and potentially low crosstalk of optics can be fully utilized for the fixed connections at each stage. However, a light-efficient and easily controlled optical switch module is difficult to build. A more promising system uses optics for the fixed connections and optoelectronic technology for the switching.
