Abstract
The ynu and y-methods are two commonly taught techniques for the paraxial layout and analysis of optical systems. These methods are based on two very different visualizations of first-order optics. In this paper we first show how these techniques are used. Then, we discuss several design problems that have been solved by using one approach or the other. We are hopeful that this presentation will give designers a clearer picture of the relative strengths of these two design tools.
