Image enhancement using rank-order filters in the frequency domain

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

There has been considerable interest in rank-order filters, such as the median, the alpha-trimmed mean, the extremum, and the L, M, and O filters. These filters have proven to be useful in image enhancement. We show that this concept can also be used in a transform domain, such as the frequency domain, in which the magnitudes of the Fourier components instead of the image gray values, are ranked.
