Abstract

There are many light manipulation uses that would benefit from the availability of suitable high-speed low-power electrooptic spatial light modulator (SLM) technologies. Ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) SLMs may perform these functions through modulation of optical wavefronts. In effect, these devices act as optical phased arrays. FLC-SLMs have been fabricated by patterning electrodes onto glass substrates and by using VLSI active backplanes.1 Both binary and analog modulation are possible by exploiting the range of FLCs available.
