Abstract
Monolithic mode-locked semiconductor lasers are compact and stable sources of ultrashort optical pulses with GHz to multihundred GHz repetition rates. By building the whole mode-locked laser on a single piece of semiconductor, the tedious optical alignment process with bulk optical elements are totally eliminated. The mechanical and temperature stability are also greatly enhanced because of the integrated cavity and the small volume.
