Higher order structure functions and their effects on remote sensors

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Structure functions used in atmospheric optics remove means and regularize turbulence integrals. Recently, Yaglom extended this approach to generalized, self-similar processes with stationary increments of order n. We have applied this technique to a single microthermal probe carried by a balloon system. The higher order structure functions have completely removed non-turbulent low order trends in the data and provide a consistent set of higher order structure parameters along non-stationary, non-isotropic atmospheric paths. Other applications of this approach are possible.
