Abstract
It is shown that the energy of a weak probe copropagating with a strong pump through a grating structure can be made to "heap up" on the pump's leading edge. This effect can be used to compress weak optical pulses. Though in fiber geometries the compression is for now limited by the difficulty of manufacturing strong fiber gratings, it is likely that this hurdle will be removed in the future.
