An image processing technique for spatial filtering and pattern recognition

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We describe an image processing scheme that employs the principles of two-beam coupling in BaTiO3 and the selective erasure of the FT hologram. The use of the FT of an erase beam makes the system more versatile in performing different operations with a single setup. An experimental demonstration has been performed by using two schemes, one with a counterpropagating erasure and the other with a copropagating erasure, to perform edge enhancement, bandpass filtering, and character recognition. The present system is real-time operational, energy efficient, and cascadable.
