Abstract
Continuous wave single-frequency lasers are required in a wide range of communication, sensor, and spectroscopic applications. Typically, linear resonators are not used in single frequency laser design because of the detrimental effects of spatial hole burning. This paper will focus on linear fiber lasers that utilize intra-core Bragg reflectors for cavity feedback and mode discrimination. In particular, the design constraints required to achieve single longitudinal mode operation from a standing-wave, homogeneously broadened, three- or four-level, fiber laser that utilizes intra-core Bragg reflectors for cavity feedback will be presented. Given the rare-earth doped fiber and Bragg reflector characteristics, a closed form solution describing the single-frequency operation regime, relative slope efficiency, and relative fiber laser stability is determined. Analytical and experimental results will be presented.
