Image reconstruction for computer tomography with missing projections by using the bimodal optical computer

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The bimodal optical computer (BOC) is a hybrid optoelectronic system that can solve a system of linear equations in a fast and accurate way. In this paper the BOC is used for image reconstruction. A computer tomography problem that uses the algebraic reconstruction technique can be written as a system of linear equations, Ax = p, where A is an m × n matrix that represents the intersection area of the object that needs to be scanned and the projection beam, m is the number of projections, x is an n × 1 vector that represents the unknown density of the object, and p is an m × 1 vector that represents the nonoverlapping projections. Some of the components of the vector p are assumed to be missing, and they are approximated by using interpolation. The BOC is used to solve for x in the equation Ax = p.
