Abstract

An expression for transient thermally induced birefringence for uniformly pumped cubic crystals was previously derived by Koechner and Rice.1 The formulation has been applied to the case when the crystal is being end-pumped by a Gaussian beam. Time-dependent temperature data obtained from a numerical code2 is used to estimate the transient birefringence in Nd:YAG crystals that are repetitively end-pumped by a dual-pulsed sequence. Data on time-dependent birefringence and polarization loss in output power will be presented.
