Physical optics analysis of the performance of a laser beam shaper

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Based on geometrical optics, a two lens system has been designed to transform a Gaussian beam into a plane wave with uniform irradiance. Differential equations are solved for the shape of two aspherical lens surfaces in the two plano-aspherical lens system. First, the aspherical lens surfaces have been fit to the conic plus aspherical deformation terms by a conventional formula to define the optical surfaces. Physical optics techniques have then been used to analyze the performance of this laser beam profile reshaper. Prospects and projected performance of a prototype laser beam reshaper lens system of this type will also be presented.
