Abstract
An optical fiber communication system simulator, called SCORE, that emphasizes the simulation of direct detection systems is presented. The simulator uses the Khoros image processing software package developed at the University of New Mexico and was created in conjunction with work on a novel optical space–time–division multiplexed system employing surface-normal devices. In the simulator, functional blocks or "glyphs" are created for each system component and are linked in a visual programming environment, allowing for flexible studies that can involve several components or an en tire system. The simulation tool can be used for analyzing systems and aiding in system design. A simulation example of the surface-normal OTDM system is presented, and system issues are discussed.
