Abstract

Contrast thresholds for sine-wave gratings (SWG) using VDT and chart (Ginsburg), Snellen charts and low contrast letter (LCL) charts (Pelli–Robson and Regan) are compared: to measure clinically and functionally meaningful ranges of spatial frequencies or sizes and contrast; absolute and differential contrast sensitivity; and relationship to clinical and functional vision. When these data are plotted on the same contrast sensitivity versus spatial frequency graphs important differences between the SWG and LCL are revealed.
