Instabilities in Self-Pumped Barium Titanate Phase-Conjugate Mirrors

Abstract

It has been demonstrated by several authors that an optical resonator coupled with an externally pumped1 or self-pumped2,3 barium titanate (BaTiO3) phase-conjugate mirror (PCM) exhibits instabilities in the intensity and spectrum of the output. These results have been associated with transverse mode instabilities in the phase-conjugate resonator or with longitudinal mode instabilities of the pump laser, respectively. We have observed instabilities in the reflected intensity and in the frequency shift of the phase-conjugate return which is an inherent property of the self-pumped PCM.
