Abstract

Semiconductor-doped glasses (SDG) are materials with large third order susceptibilities and have been the subject of intensive investigation during the past few years. Data on their nonlinear optical properties and relaxation parameters have previously been obtained by means of pulsed nano-, pico- and femto-second lasers. For this reason some relatively slow optical nonlinearities of SDG have not been examined. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of a CdSxSe1-x SDG light by light modulator using a pump-probe technique. Laser induced darkening and clearing with a millisecond relaxation time is shown to lead to complex structure in the subharmonic band of the modulation frequency and a near chaotic response.
