Abstract
An alternative method to optically store digital data using the photovoltaic properties of several materials has been studied by Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Writing consists of using a scanning laser beam to create miniature photosensitive areas that produce electrical power. Reading consists of activating the photosensitive areas using a scanning laser beam, thereby producing electrical signals that can then be electronically recognized and processed.
