Abstract
Bit shift characteristics of two types of direct overwrite magnetooptical recording schemes are studied. In the first method shown in Fig. 1(A) where dc laser power and ac magnetic field pulses are applied, large bit shift of around 100 ns is caused. In the second method shown in Fig. 1(B) and Fig.2, continuously oscillating laser pulses synchronizing with data channel clock are irradiated in data field and magnetic field pulses are also applied positive or negative directions depending upon that magnetic domains are formed or erased respectively. In the second method, computer simulations and experiments show that the amount of bit shift is around 5 ns and formed domains are not chevron pattern as shown in Fig.3. In addition, more precise compensation method of bit shift is also developed for future high end applications.
