Abstract

In order to develop a low cost, high performance write once optical data storage media, Hoechst Celanese has been developing organic thin films which can be spin coated directly onto polycarbonate and which can be marked with both 830 nm and 780 nm diode lasers. In this paper we discuss the optical and laser marking properties of this media, paying special attention to information obtained using Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) for evaluating surface topography.
