Abstract
Direct overwriting using light intensity modulation can achieve a high data transfer rate on a double-sided disk. As far as the media is concerned the initializing field strength and the total thickness of the magnetic layer have been reduced by adopting the magnetic triple-layer structure1,2,3. On the other hand, though the system is said to be theoretically compatible with the conventional ISO system, there are some problems still unsolved. The way of initializing the disk is one of them. We have developed an external magnet assembly for a triple layer disk and investigated the feasibility of the direct overwriting system.
