Abstract

Optical tape can provide high write-once data storage and is thus attractive for archival applications. This paper develops a readback channel model for an optical tape system that uses the differential reflectivity in the media to store information. Examples of this approach are the use of phase-change media and formation of pits on the media. In our work, we considered on-off modulation, in which a binary “1” is represented by a circular mark of higher reflectivity.
