Abstract

An elliptical inner-cladding with a near-parabolic index profile is proposed for double-clad fibre lasers (DCFL) to improve the pump coupling from diode-arrays. This novel geometry not only improves the usable fraction of pump light launched, but also prevents the bound-rays from reaching the lossy inner-clad/outer-clad interface.
