Abstract

An Er3+-doped fluorophosphate glass fiber amplifier has been constructed for the first time. Its fundamental gain and noise characteristics have been characterized. This amplifier can amplify an 8 channel WDM signal in the 1532 to 1560 nm wavelength region with a gain non-uniformity of 1.1 dB, an average signal gain of 8.2 dB and a noise figure of less than 6 dB.
