Abstract

This paper presents a new channel access protocol to improve channel utilization of optical star network. In the proposed protocol, all nodes in the network are grouped and the nodes in the group are interconnected. Allocation of time slots for transmission is done by wavelength- and time–division multiplexing. Possible collisions between the nodes in a source group are detected based on the received power level within a group. It is found in the analysis that remarkable reduction of the number of WDM channels can be observed compared to the other protocols.
