Abstract

Low-loss single-mode wavelength multiplexers which exploit wavelength coupling dependence of a fused taper coupler are commercially available.1 However, this type of wavelength multiplexer has a problem in terms of passband crosstalk and stop-band attenuation, because the coupling coefficient changes smoothly and slowly with respect to wavelength. On the other hand, wavelength multiplexers with an interference filter reported so far are apt to exhibit higher loss, although they show sharp-cut wavelength characteristics.2-4 We report a very-low-loss single-mode wavelength multiplexer using an interference filter whose insertion loss is as low as 0.52 dB at the wavelength of 1.3 μm and 0.11 dB at 1.55 μm.
