Silicon bipolar integrated circuits for multigigabit per second lightwave communications

Abstract

The high transmission capacity of single-mode optical fibers stimulates researchers worldwide to think about further increases in transmitted bit rates. The next generation of digital transmission systems in Europe will operate at ~2.5 Gbit/s. Recently, research projects have been started to develop 10-Gbit/s transmission systems. Such a high transmission speed requires not only improved optoelectronic components such as laser and photodiodes but also considerably faster electronic circuits. The basic circuits required can be taken from the block scheme of the optical fiber transmission system shown in Fig. 1.
