Abstract

Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) will have a great impact on future optical communication systems, as postamplifiers, preamplifiers and in-line repeaters. High sensitivities of 147 photons/bit1 and 152 photons/bit,2 have been reported with EDFA preamplifiers. We present here a very highly sensitive direct-detection receiver employing a 980-nm diode-pumped EDFA preamplifier.
