Abstract
To date erbium-doped Fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) have been extensively characterized for their performance as preamplifiers, post-amplifiers and as in-line repeaters in a cascade of amplifiers.1 In many moderate-distance cases, various distribution as well as multichannel WDM applications, one can envisage that benefit could also be derived from their use as bidirectional amplifiers in a combined post- and preamplifier configuration and/or as mid-span repeaters.
