Abstract
Optical short-pulse generators are useful as electro-optic samplers, soliton transmitters, and clock sources for time-division multiplexers in all-optical networks. The repetition rate for previously reported short-pulse generators using gain switching or active mode locking have been limited ≤ 40 GHz because of the electrical parasitics of the laser. Passive, monolithic mode locking eliminates problems associated with parasitics since the pulses are internally generated in the laser, but they suffer from a high level of phase noise (greater than −60 dBc/Hz at 100-kHz offset).1
