160-Gbit/s (4-ch × 40-Gbit/s Electrically Multiplexed Data) WDM Transmission over 320-km Dispersion-Shifted Fiber

Abstract

Much effort has been placed toward the development of ultra-high-capacity transmission systems, such as using wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and time- division-multiplexing (TDM) [1,2], With regard to the TDM technique, optical TDM (OTDM) was commonly used for data rates over 20 Gbit/s [2,3,4]. The progress of high-speed electronic circuit technology [5] and high-speed optical modulator technology [6], however, has enabled the use of electrically multiplexed high-speed data transmission. The configuration of the electrically multiplexed system is much simpler than the OTDM system. This paper demonstrates a 160Gbit/s (4-ch X 40-Gbit/s electrically multiplexed data) WDM transmission over a 320-km dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) with an 80-km repeater spacing. The 40-Gbit/s data were multiplexed using an InAIAs/InGaAs/lnP HEMTs IC module and fed into a high-speed, low- voltage multi-quantum-well (MOW) electroabsorption modulator module. Sensitivity penalties after transmission were less than 1 dB for all channels using dispersion control. This is, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of electrically multiplexed data transmission at 40 Gbit/s.
