Abstract

Optical transmission systems operating at over 10 Gbit/s are required to meet rapidly increasing demand for greater capacity. It is important to investigate 20 Gbit/s or faster long-haul systems using optical amplifier repeaters for single-wavelength transmission.1–3 Lee et al. reported 20-Gbit/s transmission over 560 km.1 In this paper, we demonstrate the 20-Gbit/s transmission experiments over 2040 km of dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) using two kinds of transmitter schemes; optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) and conventional TDM.
