Definition of Mode Field Diameter for Few-Mode Fibers based on Stationary Expression of Propagation Constant

Abstract

We derive a novel definition of mode field diameters (MFDs) for few-mode fibers (FMFs) from the wave equation. The MFDs obtained with our definition are useful in evaluating splice losses of each mode in FMFs.
