Abstract
Optoelectronic 3-wave mixers have been developed for the coherent photodetection and simultaneous downconversion of a temperature dependent Brillouin offset frequency to a baseband IF. Preliminary results were presented in a post-deadline paper at OFS (10) and this work is extended here to demonstrate two types of structures (MSM and Photoconductive) showing improved sensitivity. A sensitivity (SNR=1) of −60dBm in a 1MHz bandwidth at 33GHz has enabled the direct measurement and down-conversion of spontaneous Brillouin backscatter. The mixers are fabricated on semi-insulating GaAs substrates as photoconductive and double Schottky structures.
