Abstract

Efforts in the preparation of standards for optical components and instruments have been under way for several years at the international level. The International Standards Organization (ISO) has formed a Technical Committee on Optics and Optical Instruments (TC 172). The German Institute for Standardization, Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V., (DIN), acts as the host standards group or Secretariat for TC 172. The inaugural meeting of TC 172 was held in Pforzheim, West Germany in June, 1979. Within TC 172 there are nine subcommittees (SC) dealing with various aspects of optics as detailed in Table 1. Eleven nations participate actively in TC 172 while seven (France, W. Germany, Japan, The Netherlands, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States) are active in the work of SC 1, Fundamental Standards. The balance of this paper is concerned with the work of this subcommittee.
