Abstract

International standards for the ophthalmic industry and the ophthalmic professions are created by the International Standards Organization in its Technical Committee 172 (Optics). Within this technical committee (TC 172) two subcommittees, Subcommittee 7 (Ophthalmic, Endoscopic and Metrological Instruments and Test Methods) (SC 7) and Subcommittee 8 (Ophthalmic Optics) (SC 8) are primarily involved with the work on ophthalmic optics. The subcommittees are composed of experts, chosen by the sponsoring national bodies for their expertise in the areas which are under consideration for standardization. In this way the countries which are members support the effort of standard writing while at the same time insuring that their interests are represented in the process.
