Abstract

Although the technology of thermal fusion bonding of glass elements is well know and fusion welded mirror blanks have been in existence for decades, the current manufacturing process has been costly and time consuming. There are valid and defendable reasons for this current condition which generally relate to the near-custom and low volume demands of the industry. Basically, there has never been a need to "mass produce" silica lightweight mirror blanks.
