Abstract

Coming's association with astronomical telescope mirror substrates began in 1931, when attempts to make the 200" blank for Mt. Palomar of fused natural quartz had proven unsuccessful, and Corning was approached about attempting to make it of one of their still relatively new PYREX® brand glasses. The rest is history.
