Abstract

Spheres (balls) of single crystal silicon have become essential components in experiments to redefine Avogadro's constant, which requires the measurement of three quantities, namely, the density, the lattice parameter and the molar mass of a suitable single crystal. Silicon has proved to be the best material so far.
