Abstract
A three-terminal Trapatt amplifier1 was used to drive a Gax Aℓ1-x As double heterojunction laser with nanosecond pulses of six amperes. The driving system is suitable as a PCM source for optical communication systems. Since the CARITT amplifier has a pulse-sharpening characteristic it is ideal in the fibre optics applications where the optical pulse becomes wide due to dispersion, hence the pulses are reshaped at the repeaters inherently by the CARITT device alone.
