Abstract

Hard coatings of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) have several useful properties: optical transparency over a wide spectral range, chemical resistance against concentrated acids and bases, good electrical insulation and extreme hardness. These properties are closely related to the microstructure and type of bonding. For carbon the hybridisation of the electronic orbitals can be sp3 (diamond), sp2 (graphite) or sp1 (carbyne). We have studied the influence of the deposition parameters on the type of carbon bonding and on the optical properties.
