Abstract
There is a need for different thin film design techniques. Different methods are often required for the solution of different types of problems. A very powerful thin film design procedure, called the needle method, has been developed by Tikhonravov et al.1-8 This method allows new layers to be added to an existing multilayer solution. Hence, it can be used both to refine a starting design that is a good approximation of the desired performance or to synthesize a solution from the start. This technique can be used for oblique angles of incidence, any polarization and with absorbing materials.
