Abstract
We shall consider solutions for two related problems concerning thermal emission: frost-prevention on electrical insulators and thermal signature reduction of radomes. The optical requirement is low thermal emittance in the atmospheric window 8-13 μm. The objects to protect can be large and have a complex shape, which are strong argument against advanced multilayer solutions. Corrosive and abrasive resistance are important considerations as in many other optical applications. A few years ago, beryllium oxide was identified as a material for which the bulk optical emittance has a spectral profile that is favourable for frost prevention1.
