Abstract
If the wavelength separation of the offline wavelength (λ1) and online wavelength (λ2) in an ozone differential absorption lidar (DIAL) system is large so that the backscattering coefficients, and the atmospheric extinction coefficients other than ozone, are significantly different, then corrections are needed to minimize the errors introduced by these differential coefficients. Browell et al1 proposed a Bernoulli solution for the mixing ratio at the offline wavelength to correct the backscatter error and made extensive analyses on the sensitivity of the backscatter correction to various parameters. Sasano2 proposed a more generalized technique to correct the backscatter error and obtain ozone concentration and aerosol backscatter profiles simultaneously by numerically integrating two equations. The present paper analyzes the mathematical expression for the backscatter error in a different way, and proposes simpler correction techniques accordingly.
