Abstract

The retrieval of atmospheric state parameters from remotely sensed radiance observations using physical retrieval methods is highly sensitive to the accuracy of the forward model. This is a direct consequence of the generally poorly posed nature of the inverse problem. To address the question of the accuracy of forward model calculations, an initiative has been undertaken under the auspices of the International Radiation Commission to intercompare transmittance and radiance models with observed radiance observations, ITRA (Intercomparison of Transmittance and Radiance Algorithms; Chedin et al., 1988). For the present model intercomparison the participants and their affiliation are presented in the lower part of this summary.
