Abstract

The Modular Optoelectronical Scanner (MOS) is working on the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) as well as on the PRIRODA module of the Russian Space Station MIR. MOS had been built by the Institute of Space Sensor Technology of the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR) and was mainly developed for determining the colour and the substances of the ocean and the coastal waters. The sensor launched with the IRS consists of three units: the main sensor, which is the imaging biospectrometer MOS-B equipped with 13 channels between 408 nm and 1010 nm with a bandwidth of approximately 10 nm, the imaging atmosphere-spectrometer MOS-A provided with four small channels within the oxygen-A-band at 760 nm and a MOS-C-Camera working at 1.6 μm. A technical description of the MOS is given by Neumann (1995).
