Abstract
The optical quality of the eye has been the subject of many studies, ranging from geometrical aberrations, to Line or Point Spread Functions (LSF or PSF), or the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). While the great majority of these studies deal with foveal imaging, little attention has been paid to the extrafoveal case, and as a consequence, the off-axis image quality has been largely unknown. For instance, there is only one published experimental LSF result1, obtained with just one subject with a large pupil (7.5 mm), which yielded poor optical quality even in the fovea.
