Abstract
The extension of common multistage interconnection networks (MINs) to three-dimensional (3D)-MINs causes various problems for their definition and analysis. Some of them and their relations to photonic switching and optical computing are addressed throughout this paper. In particular, three questions are discussed: 1) The appropriate interconnection pattern, 2) the number of stages, and 3) the size of the switching modules.
