Abstract

A second generation laser weather indicator (LWI) system has been developed by the Advanced Systems Laboratory, Systems Development Office (SDO), National Weather Service (NWS) to separate and quantify rain, snow and hail. The discussion of the system is derived from Acheson, 1982, and Abernathy, 1982. The presentation will concentrate on data analyses and algorithm development by the Test and Evaluation Division, (T&ED), NWS.
